Airport Spur (STH 119) Reconstruction - WB Airport Spur to close starting Late Feb '12

As part of I-94 N-S Freeway Reconstruction Project, WisDOT will be reconstructing the Airport Spur Highway (STH 119) beginning late February 2012. As part of this reconstruction effort, the WB direction of Airport Spur (heading out of the MKE Airport) will be closed to traffic starting late February 2012 and will remain closed until the reconstruction is completed in late fall 2012.

Please note that the EB direction of Airport Spur (heading into the MKE Airport) will remain open throughout the duration of the project (except short-term overnight closures). Click here to view the current access restrictions to access EB Airport Spur to MKE Aiport.

Traffic exiting the General Mitchell Airport should utilize the following detour route information:

From General Mitchell International Airport to I-43/94 NB (to Downtown Milwaukee):

  • From Airport, traffic heading to Downtown Milwaukee will need to exit to Howell Avenue and turn right (north) on Howell Ave to Howard Avenue.  Turn left (west) on Howard Ave to access I-43/94 NB.
  • Traffic heading to Downtown Milwaukee can also use Howell Avenue northbound to Layton Avenue eastbound to I-794 WEST (NB) as an alternate route.

From General Mitchell International Airport to I-94 EAST (SB) (to Racine/Kenosha/Chicago):

  • From Airport, traffic heading to Racine/Kenosha/Chicago will need to exit to Howell Avenue and turn left (south) on Howell Ave to College Avenue.  Turn right (west) on College Ave to access I-94 EAST (SB).

General Mitchell International Airport to I-43/894 WB (to Madison/Beloit):

  • Traffic from the Airport heading to I-43/894 WB (to Madison/Beloit) will need to exit to Howell Avenue and turn right (north) on Howell Ave to Layton Avenue.  Turn left (west) on Layton Ave to 27th St.  Turn right (north) on 27th St to access I-43/894 WB.

Current MKE Airport Access Restrictions to/from I-43/94 (Downtown Milwaukee)

As part of I-94 N-S Freeway Reconstruction Project, WisDOT implemented a series of traffic shifts in the Mitchell Interchange area in Milwaukee on October 1, 2011. These traffic shifts resulted in long-term access restrictions to/from the General Mitchell International Airport for I-43/94 traffic starting October 2, 2011. The restrictions will be in place until fall 2012.

From Downtown Milwaukee to General Mitchell International Airport:

  • Traffic from I-43/94 SB will not be able to exit to Airport Spur. Traffic will need to exit I-43/94 SB at Howard Avenue and follow the detour to MKE Airport via Howell Avenue South.
  • Traffic from Downtown Milwaukee can also use I-794 EAST (SB) to Layton Ave Westbound to Howell Avenue Southbound as an alternate route to access MKE Airport.

From General Mitchell International Airport to Downtown Milwaukee:

  • Traffic from MKE Airport will not be able to access I-43/94 NB to Downtown Milwaukee via the Airport Spur (Highway 119). From the Airport, traffic will need to exit to Howell Avenue and travel north on the detour route to Howard Avenue to access I-43/94 NB.
  • Traffic heading to Downtown Milwaukee can also use Howell Avenue Northbound to Layton Avenue Eastbound to I-794 WEST (NB) as an alternate route.

General Mitchell International Airport to/from I-43/894 (to/from Madison/Beloit):

  • Traffic from I-43/894 EB (from Madison/Beloit) will still be able to exit at Airport Spur and access the airport via the I-94 EAST (SB) C-D Roadway.
  • Traffic from the Airport traveling to I-43/894 (to Madison/Beloit) will be able to travel west on the Airport Spur (Highway 119) and access I-43/894 WB via the I-94 WEST (NB) C-D Roadway until late February 2012. After late February 2012, since the WB Airport Spur will be closed for construction, traffic will need to exit to Howell Ave and travel north to Layton Ave, west to 27th St, and north to I-43/894 WB.

Click here for a graphical representation of the MKE Airport access restrictions to/from Downtown Milwaukee and a summary of the Detour Routes and Alternate Routes. Click here for an alternate project brief.

Please note that WB Airport Spur will be closed for reconstrucion late February 2012 - late fall 2012.

College Avenue Access Restrictions to/from I-43/94 (Downtown Milwaukee)

As part of I-94 N-S Freeway Reconstruction Project, WisDOT implemented a series of traffic shifts in the Mitchell Interchange area in Milwaukee on October 1, 2011. These traffic shifts resulted in access restrictions from College Avenue to Downtown Milwaukee via I-43/94 starting October 2, 2011.

From Downtown Milwaukee to College Avenue:

  • The exit ramp from I-94 EAST (SB) to the SB C-D roadway will allow traffic from I-43/94 SB and Downtown Milwaukee to exit at College Avenue.
  • This exit to College Avenue also acts as a secondary detour route to the General Mitchell International Airport from I-43/94 SB and Downtown Milwaukee.

From College Avenue to Downtown Milwaukee:

  • Traffic from College Avenue will not be able to access I-43/94 NB toward Downtown Milwaukee. From College Avenue, traffic will need to utilize Howell Avenue and travel north on the detour route to Howard Avenue to access I-43/94 NB.
  • Traffic heading to Downtown Milwaukee can also use Howell Avenue Northbound to Layton Avenue Eastbound to I-794 Northbound as an alternate route.
  • This access restriction is a long-term restriction and will be in effect until late summer 2012.

College Avenue to/from I-43/894 (to/from Madison/Beloit):

  • Traffic from I-43/894 EB (from Madison/Beloit) will be able to exit at College Avenue via the I-94 EAST (SB) C-D Roadway.
  • Traffic from the College Avenue travelling to I-43/894 (to Madison/Beloit) will be able to travel west on the Airport Spur (Highway 119) and access I-43/894 via the I-94 WEST (NB) C-D Roadway.
