Major Construction update August 27 - September 5

Layton Ave (Milwaukee) Roadway and Ramp Closures (Updated)

Construction crews are rebuilding Layton Avenue in preparation for the upcoming Mitchell Interchange reconstruction and mainline construction work for the I-94 N-S Freeway Project. 

The Layton Ave bridge over I-94 and the I-94 WEST (NB) exit ramp to Layton Ave are scheduled to reopen on Saturday, September 4th.

There will be occasional mid-day and overnight single lane closures on Layton Ave through September to complete fencing and median landscaping work.

The following long-term ramp and roadway closures are also in place at Layton Avenue:

• Layton Avenue entrance ramp to I-94 EAST (SB) until winter 2010
• I-94 EAST (SB) exit ramp to Layton Avenue until 2012
• Layton Avenue entrance ramp to I-94 WEST (NB) until 2012

Signed detours routes along both College Avenue and Howard Avenue are clearly marked.

Nightly Closures Scheduled at Mitchell Interchange until Labor Day Weekend

Construction activities are scheduled to close multiple system ramps at the Mitchell Interchange, I-94 EAST (SB) between the Mitchell Interchange and College Avenue, and I-94 WEST (NB) at College Avenue from Thursday, August 19th until Thursday, September 2nd from 11 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. 

These nightly Overnight Full Closure of I-94 WEST (NB) and I-94 EAST (SB) from College Avenue to the Mitchell Interchange have been scheduled to complete the removal of bridge deck forms from the Layton Avenue and Airport Spur Bridges and for the completion of painting of the College Avenue, Airport Spur, Grange Avenue and Layton Avenue Bridges.

I-94 N-S Travel Tips for Labor Day Weekend

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation urges motorists to plan ahead this Labor Day weekend as they travel through the I-94 North-South Freeway Project. Motorists should give themselves extra time to get to their destination or consider adjusting their departure time, as normal holiday travel is expected to add to the number of vehicles on the road.  If you are looking for travel information outside of the project's corridor, motorists can get the latest statewide lane closure, traffic incident, and road condition information by dialing 511 or going to www.511wi.gov.

Construction work along the corridor is scheduled to cease as of noon on Friday, September 3rd, and won't resume again until 5 a.m. on Tuesday, September 7th.  Peak travel times are expected to be between noon and 8 p.m. on Friday, September 3rd and also on Monday, September 6th. Expect delays during peak travel periods.

While construction and maintenance crews will be joining much of the rest of the nation in celebrating the Labor Day weekend, Wisconsin State Patrol and other law enforcement officers will remain on the job. 

"As part of the 'Drunk Driving - Over the Limit, Under Arrest' campaign, officers will be patrolling in greater numbers and for longer hours during the holiday weekend," said Major Dan Lonsdorf of the Wisconsin State Patrol.  "The campaign, which runs through the Labor Day weekend, combines a high-visibility law enforcement effort with a media campaign to raise awareness of the crackdown on impaired driving."  In addition, Lonsdorf noted that officers will be enforcing the state's mandatory, primary seat belt law.  "Consistent safety belt use provides the most effective protection against being ejected from a vehicle or thrown around violently inside it during a crash," he said.

27th Street (Milwauke) Resurfacing Project Update

As part of the I-94 North-South Freeway Project, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) will be resurfacing 27th Street between Howard Avenue and College Avenue in preparations for future I-94 mainline work. Expect lane closures along 27th Street during this time.  The 27th Street Resurfacing Project is scheduled to be complete in November 2010.

Howard Avenue (Milwaukee) Resurfacing Project Update

As part of the I-94 North-South Freeway Project, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) will be resurfacing Howard Avenue from 13th Street to 6th Street  in preparations for future I-94 mainline work.  Expect lane closures along Howard Avenue during this time.  The Howard Avenue Resurfacing Project is scheduled to be complete in October 2010.

Airport Spur (Milwaukee) Roadway and Ramp Closure Update

The I-94 entrance and exit ramps at the Airport Spur and its roadways are scheduled to be reconstructed in 2010.  I-94 EAST (SB) entrance and exit ramps will be sharing the Westbound Airport Spur Bridge that was built last year until Winter 2010.  There will be crossovers mid-ramp and east of I-94 to move the Westbound Airport Spur traffic over.  Lanes will be reduced to one lane in each direction.  Closures will be needed to rebuild portions of the Airport Spur in preparation for future mainline work on I-94.

Loomis Road (Milwaukee) Resurfacing and Ramp Improvement Update

As part of the I-94 North-South Freeway Project, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) will be resurfacing Loomis Road from WIS 100 to 27th Street  in preparations for future I-94 mainline work.  Expect lane closures along Loomis Road during this time.  The Loomis Road Resurfacing Project is scheduled to be complete in October 2010.

A new exit ramp configuration from I-894 WB to Loomis Road NB is being constructed at the Loomis Road Interchange.  The current ramp will remain open during construction, but be aware of traffic shifts.  The new Loomis Road ramp is scheduled to be open in October 2010.

Mitchell Interchange I-894 EAST to I-43/94 NB (Milwaukee) Lane Closure Update

As part of the I-94 North-South Freeway Project, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) has reduced the Mitchell Interchange I-894 EB to I-43/94 NB system ramp to one lane. This lane closure is needed for the staging of equipment and materials for the reconstruction of the Mitchell Interchange.  A long term closure is scheduled for this system ramp beginning spring 2011 through late 2012.

WIS 142 (Kenosha) West Frontage Roadway and Ramp Closure Updates

The West Frontage Road at WIS 142 is scheduled to be reconstructed in 2010. The work at WIS 142 has begun and is scheduled to be complete in Fall 2010.

The following long-term closures are in place for the WIS 142 West Frontage Road project:

• Full Closure West Frontage Road between WIS 142 and WIS 158 until November 2010
• Full Closure West Frontage Road just South of County E early-September 2010
• Full Closure County N West of I-94

Closures will be needed to rebuild portions of the West Frontage Road in preparation for future mainline work on I-94.

Southern Kenosha County Roadway and Ramp Closure Update

Southern Kenosha County Project in southern Kenosha County between Russell Rd (in Illinois) and WIS 50 has begun for the 2010 construction season.

The following long-term closures are in place for the Southern Kenosha County Project:

• County C (Kenosha) roadway and interchange to I-94 are now closed until December. The signed detour route is to use the West Frontage Road.
• I-94 EAST (SB) has been reduced to 2 lanes between WIS 50 and the WI/IL State Line. The lane reduction is scheduled to last until December 2010.
• I-94 WEST (NB) is reduced to two lanes from the State line to WIS 50 until December 2010. A crossover for I-94 WEST (NB) traffic is in place that moves northbound traffic to the southbound lanes from the state line to WIS 50.

County G (Racine) Roadway and Ramp Closure Update

Construction crews have rebuilt the County G interchange and I-94 Mainline.  As of Friday, August 20th at 5pm all ramps and roadways have been reopened.  I-94 will have three lanes of traffic open in each direction.

Ramsey Ave and Edgerton Ave (Milwaukee) Roadway Closure Update

As part of the I-94 North-South Freeway Project, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) will be reconstructing the bridges at Ramsey Avenue and Edgerton Avenue under I-94 in preparations for future I-94 mainline work.  Contractors have closed both Ramsey Avenue and Edgerton Avenue between 13th Street and 20th Street until Fall 20101.  During the closure the the roadways will be closed to vehicle traffic, but open to pedestrians and bicycles.

WIS 50 (Kenosha) East Frontage Road Update

The East Frontage Road at WIS 50 is being reconstructed in 2010.  Closures are needed to rebuild portion of the East Frontage Road in preparation for future I-94 mainline work.

Stage 2 of the frontage road reconstruction began Thursday, July 22.  The existing East Frontage Road (120th Avenue) were fully closed from 118th Avenue to 68th Street.  The detour route for 120th Avenue is WIS 50, the west frontage road and County K.

Access to all businesses continues to be maintained throughout the duration of the project.  When construction is complete in Fall 2010, the East Frontage Road will utilize 118th Avenue and 120th Avenue will be eliminated from 74th Place to 68th Street.

The East Frontage Road is also closed between County C and WIS 50 to replace the bridge over the Des Plains River Bridge.  This work began in July 2010 and is scheduled to be complete in November 2010.  The signed detour route is to use County H between County C and WIS 50.

New Drexel Avenue Interchange Added to Project

A new freeway interchange has been approved on I-94 at Drexel Avenue in Oak Creek.  The interchange will be part of the ongoing I-94 N-S Freeway project and is scheduled to be built in 2012.

Transit Options During Layton Ave Closure

During the closures at Layton Avenue, motorists are encouraged to use College Avenue or Howard Avenue with 27th Street or Howell Avenue. Pedestrians needing access around the Layton Avenue bridge closure are encouraged to use the Milwaukee County Transit System (MCTS) Route 55 service. No fare is required for those boarding the bus between S. 6th Street and S. 27th Street on Layton Avenue. Although, if the passenger wants to transfer to a different bus, they will need to pay full fare. For the latest information on MCTS routes and schedules, visit www.ridemcts.com.

This services will end when the Layton Avenue Bridge reopens to traffic in September 2010.

Major Construction update August 27 - September 5

I-94 North-South Freeway Project update for Milwaukee, Racine and Kenosha Counties

MILWAKEE COUNTY

Construction activities are scheduled to close multiple system ramps nightly at the Mitchell Interchange, I-94 EAST (SB) between the Mitchell Interchange and College Avenue, and I-94 WEST (NB) at College Avenue, Friday, August 27th and Monday, August 30th until Thursday, September 2nd.  Closures will occur from 11 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. each night.

These nightly Overnight Full Closure of I-94 WEST (NB) and I-94 EAST (SB) from College Avenue to the Mitchell Interchange have been scheduled to complete the removal of bridge deck forms from the Layton Avenue and Airport Spur Bridges and for the completion of painting of the College Avenue, Airport Spur, Grange Avenue and Layton Avenue Bridges.

RACINE AND KENOSHA COUNTIES

Saturday 8/28:    Full Closure of I-94 WEST (NB) exit ramp to WIS 165 and a Single Lane Closure I-94 West (NB) from State Line to WIS 165 from 9:30pm-8am

Sunday 8/29:  I-94 WEST (NB) Kenosha weigh station exit ramp and auxiliary roadway from the Visitor Center to I-94 WEST (NB) will reopen at 8am.

Wednesday 9/1: Full Closure of WIS 165 entrance ramp to I-94 WEST (NB) from 9:30pm - 5:30am;  Full Closure of auxiliary roadway from the Visitor Center to I-94 WEST (NB) from 9:30pm - 5:30am; add a single right lane closure of  I-94 WEST (NB) from WIS 165 to County C (Kenosha) from 9:30pm - 5:30am.
